A bed that creaks every time you move can make it hard to settle at night. If you are shopping for a new frame, it is natural to look for one that feels solid and stays quiet in everyday use. No material or design can promise silence in every room for its entire life, but construction, support and careful installation make a difference.
Here are the questions to ask before you buy, and the details to check when you see a bed in person.
Look closely at the joints and fittings
A frame needs to feel stable where its headboard, footboard and side rails meet. Ask how those parts connect, whether the fittings can be accessed for routine checks and how the bed can be reassembled if you move house. A fitting that is difficult to reach can make a simple adjustment harder later.
Gently test a display bed for movement at its corners and headboard. A showroom check cannot predict years of use, but it can help you assess how firmly the frame has been assembled. Ask what the supplier recommends if a joint becomes loose or starts to make a noise.

Check the slats and centre support
The mattress rests on more than the outer frame. Check how the slats are fitted, whether they are securely supported at each side and what supports the middle of a larger bed. Ask whether the slat arrangement suits the mattress you plan to use; your mattress maker may specify spacing or a particular type of base.
Revival Beds uses solid pine slats to provide a substantial mattress platform. For a fuller explanation of the options, read our guide to solid and sprung bed slats.

Think about the mattress and the floor too
A noise that seems to come from a bed frame can originate in a mattress, headboard or uneven floor. Before replacing a bed because it squeaks, try to identify the source. A sturdy new frame will not fix a creaking floorboard or a noisy mattress.
Our seven-step guide to fixing a squeaky bed explains how to check each part safely. If a joint or support is damaged, ask the supplier for advice before making alterations, especially while the bed is under guarantee.
Ask who will install the bed
Even a well-made frame needs to be assembled and positioned correctly. Ask whether delivery includes installation, who will check the fittings and how access to your room will be assessed. A bed that rocks on an uneven floor may need attention to its position or support rather than to its joints.
Revival Beds offers delivery and installation. For larger beds, we can make the bed in kit form and assemble the headboard and footboard posts on site. We also ask about stairs and tight access points in advance. If access may be difficult, give us the internal measurements so we can plan the delivery with you.
Understand the guarantee and aftercare
Ask the supplier what the guarantee covers, how to report a problem and what maintenance it recommends. Keep the assembly and mattress care instructions so you can follow the advice for your particular bed. Avoid relying on a blanket promise that any bed will remain completely silent in every circumstance.
