A squeaky bed can come from several places: the frame, slats, mattress, headboard or even the floor beneath it. Before replacing anything, find out which part is making the noise. A little movement at a joint can sound much louder at night than it does when you inspect the bed during the day.

These seven checks will help you narrow down the cause and decide what to fix. If your bed is under guarantee, check the manufacturer’s guidance before changing fittings or adding anything to the base.

1. Find where the squeak starts

Remove the bedding and gently apply pressure to different areas of the mattress and frame. Sit near each corner in turn, then test the centre and headboard. Ask someone to listen or hold a joint while you move the bed slightly. This helps distinguish a sound from the mattress from one caused by the frame or floor.

Avoid jumping on the bed to reproduce the noise. If you see a cracked slat, loose support or damaged joint, stop using that part of the bed until it has been checked.

2. Check the mattress separately

If possible, lift the mattress off the base and press it in several places on a clean, flat surface. Then test the empty bed frame. This simple comparison can reveal which part needs attention.

Some mattresses can be rotated, but many should not be flipped. Follow the care instructions for your model. Age alone does not tell you whether a mattress needs replacing; assess its condition, support and any guidance from its manufacturer.

3. Tighten accessible frame fittings

Inspect the bolts and other accessible fittings at the corners, side rails and headboard. If any are loose, tighten them using the correct tool and the maker’s instructions. Do not overtighten or force a damaged fitting.

If a fixing repeatedly works loose, or timber around it has split, ask the manufacturer or a suitable repair specialist to assess it. A quick tightening may quieten the bed temporarily without addressing the underlying issue.

4. Inspect the slats and their supports

Check that each slat is intact, correctly seated and secured as intended. Look at the side bearers and centre support too. A slat may be sound while the support beneath it has shifted or loosened.

Slat size, spacing and the way the slats are fixed all matter for mattress support. Our separate guide to solid and sprung bed slats explains what to check. Replace a cracked slat or damaged support with a suitable part rather than hiding the problem beneath padding.

5. Check the headboard and nearby furniture

A headboard can rub against the wall or move at its fixings, producing a noise that seems to come from the bed base. Gently test it with the mattress removed or while someone listens at the head of the bed. Check for contact with skirting boards or a bedside cabinet as well.

Adjust the position or tighten an accessible fixing where the manufacturer’s instructions allow. Protect the wall and finish if anything makes contact.

6. Make sure the bed stands evenly

Check that every leg rests firmly on the floor. An uneven floor or an unstable floorboard can make the frame shift when you turn over. Try moving the bed slightly to see whether the sound changes, while keeping it safely supported.

Use a suitable furniture leveller if the bed maker recommends one. If the floor itself creaks, the bed may not need repairing at all.

7. Get help if the noise remains

If you cannot identify the cause, or a joint, slat or support is damaged, contact the bed supplier. Tell them where the noise occurs, what you have checked and whether it happens with the mattress removed. Photos or a short video may help them diagnose it.

For a Revival bed, contact us before altering its construction, especially if it is within the guarantee period. Our team can advise on the bed’s fittings and installation. If you are choosing a new bed, see our guide to choosing a bed frame that won’t squeak for practical buying checks. Ask how its frame, slats and centre support are assembled, and what delivery and installation include. Explore our solid wooden beds if you would like to see the options.
