Check how the slats are fitted, whether a larger bed has suitable centre support and how securely the side rails meet the headboard and footboard. Ask what type of base your chosen mattress needs. A metal frame with a well-designed base may suit it better than a poorly supported wooden frame, and the reverse can be true.

Which bed frame is less likely to squeak?

A damaged part or loose joint is a reason to seek the maker’s advice, but a squeak on its own does not prove that the whole bed needs replacing.

Delivery, assembly and access
Consider how the frame reaches the bedroom and who assembles it. Ask for the dimensions of the largest components and measure stairs, landings, doorways and tight turns if access may be difficult. A sturdy design is of little use if it cannot be installed correctly in the room.
