Latex can give a mattress a buoyant, responsive feel. It is used in some mattresses as a foam core and in others as a comfort layer above pocket springs. Those designs can feel quite different, so it helps to look beyond the word “latex” when you compare them.
Here is what latex may add to a mattress, where the rest of the construction matters, and what to ask before choosing one.
What is latex in a mattress?
Natural latex starts with sap from a rubber tree, which is processed into a foam. Mattresses may use natural latex, synthetic latex or a blend. A natural latex layer does not mean the entire mattress is made of latex or that every other component is natural. Check the specification of the complete model, including its spring unit, upholstery, cover and any other comfort layers.

How does a latex layer feel?
Latex generally responds quickly when you move and gives a springier sensation than the slow, close contouring that some people associate with memory foam. It can add cushioning without the same feeling of sinking deeply into the surface. The spring unit, upholstery and mattress tension still affect the overall feel; two mattresses with latex layers need not feel alike.

Will latex feel cooler or suit an allergy?
Airflow and temperature comfort depend on the cover, fillings, bedding, room and the way you sleep, as well as the foam. A latex layer cannot guarantee a cool night for everyone. Try different mattresses and ask about the full construction if temperature is a concern.
A mattress containing natural latex should not be assumed suitable for someone with an allergy or a medical condition. Ask for the exact materials and seek advice from an appropriate healthcare professional if you have a specific health concern.
What should you check before ordering?
Compare the feel, size, depth and weight of the complete mattress. Ask which bed base it needs and whether your delivery route has narrow stairs or turns. A pocket sprung mattress with a latex layer may be heavy and should not be treated as though it were a flexible, all-foam mattress.
Follow the care instructions for the model you buy. Henry Smeaton mattresses are generally rotated rather than flipped; the Next Generation models do not need rotation. Check the instructions supplied with your particular mattress before moving or cleaning it.
