A four-poster bed is easy to recognise: four upright posts rise from the corners of the bed and connect to an upper frame. That frame can be left on show or dressed with fabric. The shape has a strong presence, but the history of the style is more varied than the familiar fairy-tale image suggests.

One of the clearest surviving examples is the Great Bed of Ware, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum. It shows how a bed could become famous for its craftsmanship, scale and stories as well as for its use.

The Great Bed of Ware

The V&A dates the Great Bed of Ware to around 1590. It is more than three metres wide, and its carved woodwork includes Renaissance-inspired designs, foliage and figures. The museum says it was probably made as an attraction for an inn in Ware, Hertfordshire, where travellers could stop on the route north from London.

The bed became a talking point. Shakespeare referred to it in Twelfth Night in 1601, and the name “Great Bed of Ware” was recorded by Ben Jonson in 1609. A long-running story says that four couples could fit in it; the V&A describes this as a reputation rather than a confirmed capacity.

The bed’s details tell their own story. Visitors left initials and red wax seals on the wood, while traces of paint remain on carved figures. Its scale and decoration make it an extraordinary historic object, rather than a typical example of the beds people used at home.

From a historic statement to a modern bedroom

A modern four-poster does not need the scale or ornament of the Great Bed of Ware. The defining feature is the upright frame, which can create a focal point with or without curtains. A more restrained design can bring the same strong outline to a bedroom without recreating a period room.

Before choosing a bed, consider the overall footprint of the frame, the available ceiling height and the space around it. If you plan to add curtains, think about how much fabric you want and whether you prefer a fully dressed canopy or a lighter look. A bedside cabinet can complete the arrangement while keeping the bed as the main feature.
