A four poster bed can be the focal point of a bedroom on its own. You can leave the frame open, soften it with fabric, or build a look around it with bedding and colour. The best approach depends on the shape of the bed and the feel you want in the room.
Here are five ways to style a four poster bed while keeping the frame at the centre of the room.
1. Let the frame show
If the posts, headboard or footboard have plenty of detail, keep the bedding simple so the timber remains visible. A clean, restrained look can work especially well with a carved or strongly shaped frame.
A bed with a simpler outline gives you more room to add texture through bedding, cushions or a throw. Start with the frame, then add only the details that help create the look you want.
2. Use fabric to soften the canopy
Light fabric can make a four poster feel softer and more relaxed. A sheer voile or a simple drape at the sides can add a little movement without covering the whole frame.
Before adding fabric, check that the bed is designed to carry it and follow the maker’s guidance on attachment and weight. If you are unsure, ask before hanging anything from the frame.

3. Choose a bedding palette
Start with a main colour that suits the room, then add one or two accents through a blanket, cushions or a bed runner. Neutral bedding lets the wood stand out; a stronger accent can make the bed feel more dramatic.
Texture can add interest without making the whole scheme busy. Keep the combination balanced so the bed, bedding and surrounding furniture do not compete for attention.

4. Give the bed space
A four poster has height and presence, so leave enough room around the posts to move comfortably. Check the outside dimensions of the exact frame, not only the mattress size, when planning the furniture and clearances.
Try to avoid crowding the bed with too many large accessories. A clear space around the frame helps it read as the main feature of the bedroom.
5. Match the finish to your room
The timber and finish contribute to the overall scheme. Pine in Old Wood and natural oak have been popular choices in recent years, while pine in Walnut has become more popular this year as tastes have shifted.
Finish can be difficult to judge on a screen. You can compare colours at home with our free wood samples or book a showroom visit to see the timber in person.
