Softwoods and hardwoods both have their place in the world of furniture and beds. Whilst softwoods are more affordable and cost effective, hardwoods give that feel of luxury and tend to boast a longer life-span. Typically hardwoods are slower growing, and are more dense than softwoods meaning they are more fire resistant.

What is Solid Pine?

Pine is considered a softwood that has over 100 species around the world. It is usually white or pale yellow in colour and lightweight with an open grain.

Whilst pine is more flexible and lighter in weight than most hardwoods, it has a great deal of stiffness and resistance to shock, which makes it a solid choice for many furniture pieces. It may not last as long as hardwood, but pine is still a strong material, particularly if you like the rustic or country styles. Unlike engineered wood, which is composed of wood fibres held together with adhesives, solid wood is timber cut from the tree.

What Softwoods Do Revival Beds Use?

For our solid pine bed frames, we use both Quebec Yellow and Scandinavian Redwood to achieve the optimum combination of strength, stability and intricate design detail.

Quebec Yellow

Botanical Name: Pinus Strobus

Also known as Eastern White Pine, the heartwood is a pale straw colour and the sapwood is almost white. It is a soft, straight-grained and evenly textured wood. Quebec Yellow is grown across Canada, from Newfoundland to Eastern Manitoba and reaches its best development in the Ottawa Valley in Ontario and Quebec.

Scandinavian Redwood

Botanical Name: Pinus Sylvestris

Also known as Scots Pine or Baltic Redwood, this wood varies in colour depending on the region it is sourced from. The sapwood is a creamy-white to yellow colour, and the heartwood is usually a yellow-brown. This softwood originates from Europe, grown most widely across Scandinavia. Known for its good quality, it is a sustainably sourced timber imported from forests with FSC or PEFC Certification in Scandinavia and Russia.

More about Natural Oak

Solid Wood Bed Footboard

Oak is a hardwood, and as a result of a condensed and more complex structure, hardwoods generally offer a superior level of strength and durability.

Our trusted partner, Gizia, have supplied Revival Beds with the most beautiful European Oak timber since the beginning of our journey into producing oak furniture and beds. All of our European Oak comes from certified sustainably managed forests.

Sustainability

Here at Revival Beds we are working more and more on sustainability and being a manufacturer we have the controls to improve our methods.

Here’s just some of the ways we are being sustainable:

  • Any scrap wood we can’t possibly re-use is taken away by a farmer who uses it.
  • Sawdust produced is taken to a local horse sanctuary and used there.
  • Protective sleeves are re-used on the furniture instead of plastic wrapping.

You can be assured that every Revival product, be that wooden beds or furniture, is manufactured from either hardwood or softwood timber sourced from FSC certified forests.

What is FSC?

FSC stands for ‘Forest Stewardship Council’. They are an international non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting responsible forestry. FSC certifies forests all over the world to ensure they meet the highest environmental and social standards.

Forests are inspected and certified against strict standards based on FSC’s 10 Principles of Forest Stewardship. These inspections are undertaken by independent organisations that are accredited by the FSC. In order to be given FSC certification a forest must be managed in an environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable manner.
