A storage bed can put the space beneath your mattress to practical use. The best type depends on what you want to store, how you want to reach it and the room available around the bed.

Compare the complete frame dimensions, usable storage space and opening mechanism before deciding. A mattress measurement alone does not tell you the footprint of the bed or how much space is needed to open its storage.

Ottoman beds: storage beneath a lifting base

An ottoman opens by lifting part of the mattress support, with the opening direction and mechanism varying by model. This can provide access to a compartment beneath the mattress without pulling drawers into the room.

Check how the base opens, the clearance above and beside it, and the manufacturer’s instructions for the mechanism and compatible mattress. Consider how comfortably you can operate it and reach the contents, including whether your usual duvet, pillows or throws need to be moved before opening the base. Do not assume that every ottoman has the same compartment layout or capacity.

Divan drawers: access from the sides or end

A divan may offer drawers at the sides, at the foot or in another arrangement. Drawer storage can be convenient for items you use regularly, provided nearby furniture does not prevent the drawers from opening.

Compare the internal drawer dimensions, runners, stated load limits and construction of the particular model. The word “divan” does not establish how much weight its drawers can hold.

Wooden frames with storage drawers

A wooden bed with drawers combines an exposed frame with storage beneath it. Look at the frame’s design as well as the drawer arrangement, and check whether storage is available on the bed and size you are considering.

Allow enough clearance to pull the drawers out and reach their contents. Compare the current Revival Beds underbed storage options. Our wooden storage-drawer buying guide covers this option in more detail.

Compare usable space, access and total cost

Measure the items you intend to store and compare them with the usable compartments. Check any weight limits, ventilation and care instructions. Bedding, shoes and seasonal clothing may need different containers or protection.

Compare the complete price, including the frame, storage option and any delivery or assembly charges. Storage may reduce the need for another piece of furniture, but that depends on your belongings and layout; it does not guarantee a saving.

Plan the room before choosing

Mark the bed, wardrobe, bedside furniture and doors on a room plan. Include space for drawers or a lifting base to operate, and keep a comfortable route around the room. For broader organisation ideas, see our bedroom storage guide.
