Henry Smeaton Mattresses

During our lifetimes we spend roughly a third of our time in bed. So, if you’re spending so much time in bed, doesn’t it make sense to have a top quality mattress to sleep on?

As members of the Guild of Master Craftsmen and a founder member of the National Bed Foundation, Henry Smeaton mattresses are traditionally made to the highest of standards and quality-tested at every stage of production.

From Next Generation Memory Foam and Natural Latex to Traditional Pocket Sprung Mattresses with up to 11,000 high-density pocket springs, the Henry Smeaton collection offers a range of construction and grades of firmness, from (3ft) single up to (8ft) caesar bed widths, even bespoke sizes.

Each mattress comes complete with a 5-year guarantee, and all fabric is 100% chemical-free and 100% recyclable, so when the time comes to replace it, your old mattress won’t end up in a landfill.

Delivery and installation is free when purchased with one of our handcrafted beds, and we can even take away your old mattress as part of our service (additional charge would apply).

Mattresses FAQ

How often should I replace my mattress?

A good quality mattress should last between 5-7 years before it needs to be replaced.

Yes, if you purchase a mattress from us then we can recycle your old mattress. There is an additional charge for this service – please call 01777 869 669 to find out more.

To find out which type of mattress is best, we would recommend testing a few to find out which feel – soft, medium or firm – suits you the best. It is an individual choice, so unless you know which feel you like best; it’s difficult for an advisor to recommend one over another.

This refers to the number of springs in a 5ft (king-size) mattress regardless of whether the mattress is a pocket sprung deck or a coil sprung deck.

The depth of mattresses can vary quite a lot. Foam mattresses like memory foam can be quite thin – as little as 8 inches (this doesn’t mean the mattress is poor quality). On the other end of the scale, a pocket sprung mattress can be as much as 14 inches deep depending on the spring count and the amount of filling. This can be a problem when buying a fitted sheet, but at Revival Beds, we can supply them made to measure.

How often you should turn your mattress depends on the type of mattress you have. A mattress that is built from the bottom and finished with a topper should only be rotated; not turned.

If your mattress is built from the core with the same filling either side it should be turned every couple of months or so.

Memory foam and latex are both types of foam. Memory foam is a man-made product, whereas Latex is entirely natural and harvested from rubber trees. Latex also offers a cooler sleeping experience.

These materials can be combined with springs within a hybrid mattress. Alternatively, each material can be used to make the whole mattress.

Mattresses usually contain materials that can create dust, which can be a problem for people who have allergies. To combat this, mattress manufacturers can include a hypoallergenic barrier in the build of the mattress which contains the dust within the mattress.

Latex and memory foam mattresses are entirely free from any dust at all and are hypoallergenic.

When the springs within a mattress are all interlocking; this stops them moving independently of each other.

Henry Smeaton began making beds and mattresses as far back as 1893 and taking them by horse and cart to sell them on Retford market.

The family business now spans five generations with a reputation that has been built upon an unswerving commitment to quality, exacting standards and traditional craftsmanship.

As a member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen we value those traditional skills, passed down from generation to generation using only the finest materials.

Each mattress is individually produced and quality-tested at every stage of production, to the highest standard and specification in our purpose built factory.

Yes, each Henry Smeaton mattress is handmade to order. They are built and constructed by hand, stitched using handheld machines and tufted using mattress needles.
