Can’t find a big antique Bed?

I took a trip to the International Antique & Collectors Fair in Newark recently. My aim was to find out just how many beds larger than 5’0” and 6’0” were around fifty or a hundred years ago or even further back in time. Luckily it was a glorious sunny day so I was able to look around the hundreds of furniture pitches without dodging showers.

I have to admit the place was short of nothing. It was crammed with colourful dealers and customers from all over the world. This reflected the furniture and antiques for sale which were also from everywhere.

So you get the picture, on paper you ought to be able to find anything you fancy, well almost.

The biggest original antique bed I managed to find was a beautiful 5’0” brass half tester. The bed was in need of a fair bit of restoration and priced at over £2000.00.

Who knows whether it was worth it or not, all I know is I went to the biggest antique fair in the country and the largest original bed I found measured 5’0”.  As for beds that have been extended or beds made from new there were a few of those but nothing over 6’0”.

So if you’re looking for a bed over 6’0” the International Antique & Collectors Fair at Newark is a great day out but not the place for big beds.
